Language textbooks remain indispensable for most teachers most of the time, and their use, inevitably, strongly models teaching and learning practices. However, in initial teacher training at university, textbooks may be used to illustrate theoretical courses, the main didactic issues and the various methodological approaches, approaches and techniques, but rarely to provide future language teachers with genuine practical training in their use. The scale of competence in textbook use proposed here can be used as an evaluation/self-assessment grid for this competence, and probably also - the corresponding experimentation remains to be done - as a model for progression and evaluation in language teacher training courses.
